I live in a 3 family house, and live in the first floor apartment, with 2 other above me.
The main door into the house does not have a lock on it.
Basically anyone can walk into the main common area, and get to MY front door, or the door leading upstairs to the other 2 apartments
Is my landlord required to have a lock on this door? Is it reasonable to ask for one?

That is a violation of the code, and your LL is required to install a lock.

could you tell me which law this is violating, or give me the langauge that the law describes? I want to ask him to install a lock, and be able to back it up if he refuses.
thanks!
