I am getting disability benefits now, for about 2 years. Now my aunt died and she left me some cash. Only about $4,000. Could this cause a problem for my disability benefits and do I need to report it? Thanks.

If you are collecting Social Security Disability Insurance, known as SSDI, that is not a needs based program and is not impacted in any way by such an inheritance or other change in income. Follow this link to a thread about SSDI eligibility. Supplemental Security Income, often called SSI, is a needs based program and may be impacted by any change in your income. If your income goes over a certain level while you are receiving SSI (currently $2000 for individuals and $3000 for married couples), that may make you ineligible for additional benefits until your income goes back below allowable levels. So, yes, you do need to report the income. For more information, visit our Massachusetts Disability Law Discussion Forum.
