So what's the answer? Can I discharge my criminal fines (almost $1000) if I file Chapter 7 Bankruptcy? I also have alimony to pay but I'm pretty sure I can't get rid of that.

There are certain debts that cannot be discharged in bankruptcy, and they are, for the most part, spelled out in 11 U.S.C. (United States Code) Section 523[a]. Criminal fines and alimony are examples of debts that cannot ordinarily be discharged under Chapter 7. There are a few, very narrow (don't get your hopes up) exceptions to this general rule, so you should check with your bankruptcy attorney.
