Where should I file bankruptcy?

I just moved to Massachusetts (3 months ago) from New York. I need to file bankruptcy now but I'm not sure which state I need to file in. Does it matter? Thanks for your help.

The bankruptcy code allows you to file in the state where you currently reside, have a home, or even in a state where you merely have assetts.  However, before filing you should talk to a Massachusetts bankruptcy attorney to figure out which exemptions you should use.  In some cases, depending on how long you lived in New York, you may have to use the New Yourk exemptions.  Follow this link for more information about bankruptcy exermptions.   And for more general information, check out our Massachusetts Bankruptcy Discussion Forum.
