When can stores be open in Massachusetts on holidays?

I know Massachusetts doesn't have such strict laws anymore about being open on Sundays and holidays, but are there ANY days where a retail store is legally prohibited from opening? I ask because I work at a national chain that NEVER seems to close. I know I can get time and a half for working these days but I'd rather have all of the holidays off. Thanks for your help.

Work on holidays and Sundays in MA

As far as I can tell, (by reading Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 136, Section 16), the only time a retail store is absolutely prohibited from opening is on Christmas day, but only if Christmas falls on a Sunday.  Stores and shops that sell retail goods can be open on all other Sundays and holidays, including Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Labor Day.  However, you are correct that, in some cases, you are entitled to time and a half for working holidays.

Retail stores that open on New Year's Day, Columbus Day after 12 noon, or on Veterans' Day after 1:00 p.m. are required to pay their employees time and one-half, regardless of the number of employees on their payroll. Retail stores that open on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day must pay time and one-half if at least eight employees are on the payroll.  One related thought:  You can follow this link for information on how, in some cases, employees can avoid working on religious holidays.  Hope all that helps.
