How long do I have to wait to file an SSDI disability claim? I have been unable to work for six months and I'm wondering if I can get payments for all that time.

You do not have to wait. As soon as it is apparent that your injury may keep you from working for a year or more, you should file your claim. At that point, the burden is on you to prove your disability will last for at least 12 months.
You may be entitled to retroactive benefits all the way back to the 'date of onset'(often the first day you were unable to work because of the disability). However, benefits are not paid retroactively for more than one year prior to the date of an SSI or SSDI claim. The process is somewhat involved, so I would contact an attorney who specializes in SSDI claims. Good luck.
