What damage is covered by home owner's insurance?

I'm not sure if this is a question of Massachusetts law or just a contract situation where my policy controls, but what damage is covered by home-owner's insurance in MA? During the storm we had many shingles ripped from our roof by high wind, then water started coming in and drenched furniture, electronics and rugs. I assumed it would all be covered and I'm waiting to hear back from my agent but my wife is worried because she read water damage is not covered by most policies. Is that correct?

Wind and rain damage and homeowner's insurance

Your wife is correct that damage caused by floods, whether resulting from rising rivers, heavy rains, or melting snow is not covered by typical homeowner's insurance policies.  Rather, the property owner must have flood insurance for such events.  However, water damage that results from damage caused by wind is covered by most policies, as is the damage to the roof, siding, windows, etc. that led to the water infiltration.  Also, when winds blow a tree or branch onto a house or other structure, the resulting damage will likely be covered.  If a tree falls from one yard onto a neighbor's house, the coverage by either insurance company, yours or your neighbor's, may depend on whether negligence played a part in the damage caused by the tree.

While you're waiting to hear back from the insurance company, make sure you do a thorough job documenting your ENTIRE loss.  Go ahead and take some pictures or videos and keep receipts for all relevant expenses, including pumps, shop vacs, fans or other equipment you use to clean up the mess, or services you hire to clean it up for you.  Those expenses may also be covered.
