I don't get this. Why does the Social Security Administration have a five month waiting period and will I eventually get payments for those five months?

Editor's Response
The Social Security Administration justifies this waiting period by arguing that SSDI is for those who have "long-term" disabilities. Accordingly, the Social Security Administration will not make disability payments to anyone who has not been disabled continuously for five full months. If you are eventually awarded benefits, payments may start retroactively, but only starting with the sixth full month after your disability began, and you will not receive any payments for the initial five month waiting period. I don't necessarily agree with the SSA's logic, but there you have it. Follow this link for an explanation of how the SSA calculates the period for which applicants are entitled to SSDI back pay.
