Is there a way to give up parental rights if both parties (mother and father) consent to father giving up all legal parental rights. No court ordered child support has been established. There has been a court ordered paternity test that proved paternity and father's name has been added to the birth certificate.
Basically, the mother and father both want the father to give up all rights and legal access to the child. Does there have to be a stepfather to adopt the child before this happens? Or, can the father just sign over his rights without a second parent adopting the child?

Hello. All states, including Massachusetts allow a parent to voluntarily give up parental rights in certain situations. It is called relinquishment. However, as to your question, I do not believe Massachusetts allows relinquishment in cases where no adoption is pending. A call to a family law attorney should settle the question for you quickly.
