Can you explain a little bit about the Massachusetts law for getting aftermarket tinted glass or sun shields installed on my car? If I get it done, how do I know I wont get a ticket. It seems like some cars I see on the road have really dark glass that seems like it would violate the law, and so it makes me wonder how it works.

The law in questions is Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 90, Section 9D. If you have the aftermarket tinting applied at a reputable shop they should be able to explain their process and why the product they install does not violate MA law. According the Massachusetts Department of Motor Vehicles, as long the tint registers at least 35% on a tint meter, it should be fine. (Tint meters measure light transmittance through the glass.) Also, the tint on the windshield should not go below the top six inches.
As for the cars you see with darker tint, I cannot say. Maybe they have illegal tint, or they may have tint (usually on the rear windows) that was installed at the factory with the approval of the federal Department of Transportation. Massachusetts law cannot prohibit such tinting. Good luck
