My family rents an in-law apartment with the actual owner/landlord living in the main house, we are tenants at will.Last month we were told to start looking for a new place because they were having financial problems and the house may get foreclosed on but days later were then told that their mortgage had been paid and everything would remain the same. Now today we were told we have until the end of the month to find a new place. I'm wondering what rights (if any) we have as tenants at will. There is no way we can find a place that soon, nevermind afford to move this soon. We have two small children, one of which starts school in 3 weeks. We are starting to think it may be in our best interest to make them evict us if that will buy us more time. Also if the house does infact get foreclosed on where do we stand then? Any advise you can give us in this matter would be helpful, thanks

It doesn't matter who owns the building or whether the building has been foreclosed, you do not have to move out until you have received a proper thirty day's notice and, if you choose to fight the eviction, a court orders you to move. Of course, if the building is foreclosed, you want to make sure you pay your rent to the appropriate person, the actual owner. Visit our MA Landlord and Tenant Law Discussion Forum for much more info on this subject.
tenants at will
Thanks for your response. Another question if you don't mind is since they went about thing the way they did, would it be better for us to put our rent in an account (escrow)?? I don't know how to find out if the house has been forclosed, the landlord has been giving us false information all along. And when and if we do get the appropriate 30 day notice, about how long do you think we are looking at before we have to move? Thanks again.
