I have been on SSDI for several years due to metastatic bone cancer. After 6 years of IV chemotherapy and several bouts of radiation, I am not "cured".....but still kicking. My question is......I realize that with the high costs of prescription drugs these days (as many of the viewers can relate to), it is to one's advantage to work if at all possible. I understand about the "Trial Work Periods" of 9 months, and the 36 month "Extended Period of Eligibility" in which one can earn up to $1000.00 per month and keep their benefits. During this time, one can "deduct" certain items such as medication costs they pay themselves (such as co-payments) if they are disability related. With my Medicare D drug plan, I hit the coverage gap (donut hole) rapidly as my oral chemotherapy drugs and other prescriptions run around $1,400.00 per month. Does SSA allow one to deduct the cost of such drugs while one is in the coverage gap and thus paying for them out of their own pocket with no reimbursement? Is it the full costs of the drugs until one reaches the catastrophic phase of the Part D drug plan?. If so, could I use the full $1,400.00 as an IRWE during the months I fall into the coverage gap? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Sorry, but that question is way to complex for my limited understanding of the SSDI system. Given the amount of money involved on a monthly basis, you may want to talk to an attorney who does SSDI work. I know it's an unwelcome expense, but an attorney who is familiar with these issues should be able to help you out at a minimal charge. If that is not possible, try the Social Security Administration's hot-line at 1-800-772-1213. Good luck.
