I'm not sure I want to apply for Social security disability income because I feel like it's just like welfare and I don't want to take handouts. But I saw an ad on tv though for a lawyer who said it was not welfare so I'm wondering about the difference?

No, SSDI is not welfare or a handout. In fact, the "I" in SSDI stands for Insurance. The program is funded by the federal payroll tax and designed to provide income for disabled workers. You cannot get Social Security Disability Insurance benefits until you have gone through a lengthy application process in which you, or your attorney, demonstrates that you have a qualifying disability. Further, unlike Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which IS a needs-based program, you cannot get SSDI unless you have worked a certain number of years (or quarters as the SSA puts it). Good luck with your application.
