Who would be laible for a slip and fall on a public sidewalk?
The City or the abutting homeowner?
There is a municipal ordinance requiring the abutting property owner to remove snow.

injury on public sidewalk

My understanding of the law in Massachusetts is that, depending on where you live, you may be fined if you do not shovel the public sidewalk that abuts your property, BUT, you do not have liability for injuries that occur on public sidewalk as a result of snow and ice unless you put the snow or ice on the sidewalk.  For example, if you used your snow thrower to toss snow from your driveway on to the sidewalk and someone slipped on the mess you created, then you may have liability.  Follow this link for more information about the new standard for injury liability for snow and ice removal.

Injury on Public Sidewalk

Thank you for your response.

Any thoughts on a homeowner's liability if the fall is on a portion of a property owner's driveway that intersects a public sidewalk?

The homeowner has to shovel that part of the driveway as a means to enter and exit their property and pedestrians inevitably cross that portion while walking on the sidewalk.

I have always heard that the city/town owns the first few feet.
