Should I talk to my doctor about applying for SSDI

If I'm planning on applying for Social Security Disability does it make sense to talk to my doctor about the application before I go forward? I'm wondering if there is anything the doctor can do for me to help make the process easier. Also, I know I am physically unable to work but what if my doctor disagrees or just doesn't want to help with my application?

Talk to Dr. before SSDI application

Yes, I think it's a good idea to talk to your doctor before applying for Social Security Disability. Many doctors are willing to help you with the application process by writing statements about your disability and about her opinion regarding your ability to work. However, if you plan on hiring a disability lawyer, I would talk to the lawyer first, before talking to the doctor, to see if the attorney has any thoughts on this subject and whether he has a form statement for the doctor, something that the attorney believes will help the doctor focus on information that is most helpful to your case.

I think your attorney will agree that, if your doctor does not believe you are disabled or does not wish to get involved in the application process for SSDI, you may want to locate a new doctor prior to applying. Good luck.
