Selective enforcement in 55+ condo complex

I live in a 55+ condo complex. The trustees here have refused to enforce the rules and provisions of the Trust vigorously and uniformly. They continue to allow some very vocal people to violate certain rules, mainly certain decorations in common areas, while telling all others that they are expected to obey the rules. They call this "special permission". To press the issue, I placed a "for sale" sign within my garage, while leaving the door open. They trustees sent a letter directing that I remove the sign. At the same time they allow at least two others to display a sign on the exterior of their buildings (a clear violation of the rules) As far as I can tell, the sign in the exterior is not a violation, and the trustees cannot cite a specific rule violation. One can find about a half dozen egregious and very visible violations here in the common area, such as a fountain, an old bathtub used as a planter, illegally excavated flower gardens in the common area, and others. Does this sound like selective enforcement? They insist that they have the right to grant "special permission". Would a court call this a violation of Equitable Defenses? Thank you.

I am not familiar with the practice of granting 'special permission' and, to me, the Board's actions do sound like selective enforcement.  My opinion wont get you very far, however.  Follow this link to post that outlines your, sadly, limited options in cases of selective enforcement of rules.
