I'm thinking about filing a claim for SSDI on my own and was wondering about what onset date I should claim. Is it always best to just select the last day that you work?

Editor's Response

Typically, claimants will allege the day after they last worked as their onset date.  (The SSA refers to this as the Alleged Onset Date).  However, depending on the facts of your situation, your onset date might be some time before or after you left work.  Also, in some situations, the judge may ask you to amend your onset date. In some cases, it may make sense for you to agree to that change.  In other cases, changing the onset date could impact your eligibility.  For these reasons, as you may have read in other threads, I always recommend that claimants hire an experienced Massachusetts disability attorney before making a claim for SSDI.  The fees are reasonable, based on a contingency arrangement, and SSDI attorneys typically offer a free consultation.
