I recently signed a lease with a male roommate. I lived there for only 3 days and while there I felt my safety was threatened. He lost his temper and made menacing remarks toward me and my dog. I also witnessed him breaking into my room. Late at night he would come and bang on my door, text me and other stalker type behaviors. I was so scared I vacated the premises and contacted the landlord. What are my rights in this case? The roommate is trying to get me to pay the utilities even though I haven't lived there. My landlord is letting me out of the lease early but still wants me to pay next months rent as well. I can not afford to pay rent for 2 places and it seems unfair since my safety was threatened. Especially considering I paid rent for this month and only lived there 3 days. I also know that there were illegal drugs on the premises and that the roommate was under the influence of them. Additionally, I still have not received a copy of my lease to review.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
