Right to Refuse medical treatment in MA

Is it true that Massachusetts law allows a person to refuse medical treatment even if the doctor says she needs it to survive?

Editor's Response

Yes.  Both Massachusetts and federal courts have ruled that, with certain limited exceptions, competent adults are free to refuse medical treatment, even if the treatment is considered the standard and appropriate medical response to the condition, and even if the doctor believes the patient is making an unwise decision of forgoing an opportunity for a cure.  Please tell your friends about Forum.
