Long story short... I have a crazy roommate, and I decided the best thing to do would be to move. She collects rent for the entire apartment and pays the landlord with one check. I wrote her a note indicating that I would make arrangements with the landlord for my portion of the rent.
She went ahead and paid my rent, so now I owe her for April. I paid last month's rent when I moved in, and my understanding is that this should count as my April rent (I am leaving April 30).
I called the landlord and he asked me to pay her the rent she paid for me and then he will return my rent and security deposit after I move out.
He seems like a reasonable person but I don't trust my roommate. I am afraid she can make all kinds of claims against me and this might affect my ability to get my last month's rent back. I asked the landlord to put our agreement in writing so I could protect myself from her. So far I have not heard from him.
I am concerned about paying April rent to my roommate. It seems he should refund her or just use the amount as credit for next month's rent.
Oh, and I have no lease. I have no paperwork, I have never signed anything, there is not a single jot of paperwork. Just to clarify the situation.
What do I do? I understand that my roommate has paid extra money but I need to protect myself.
To make the story a bit more juicy... she threatened me on 4/1 that she was going to change the locks if I did not pay her that day. (This was not an April Fool's joke.) As I said... a crazy roommate! I did report this to the landlord but I have not gotten a response.
Help! I am beyond stressed in this situation.
