In MA, can a tenant provide services (such as lawn maintenance and house cleaning) as a form of rent?

Swapping work for rent

I don't know of a Massachusetts law that would prohibit a tenant from providing work in lieu of rent, but I can think of at least a couple of issues.  Would the landlord still give you some kind of receipt or other documentation that would allow you to prove you have paid the "rent"?  It may not seem important now, but if the relationship breaks down and you end up in court, you will need some proof of rent payment.

Also, the IRS may view this transaction as taxable, for both parties.  Good luck.
