If a consumer of a product or service asks for a receipt or some form of documented proof of purchase for a product or service, is the provider obligated to provide such under Mass Consumer Law (or Federal Law)?
I know Walgreens and others ask would you like a receipt and others like Mass Pike will provide one if requested, what about a store, MBTA parking garages etc can they refuse to provide one? Is there separate laws around man'ed stations versus automated machines versus manual trust boxes.
The reason I ask is that if the product or service is called into question, I as a consumer have the burden of proof with no documentary proof of purchase. Can a vendor simply post a sign saying no receipt will be provided as a disclaimer, thus providing the consumer notice before entering the contract of their no receipt policy.
