Reason for eviction with Tenancy at Will

My scumbag of a landlord just gave me a notice to quit for no reason! I have paid rent here for five years and now he just tries to throw me out. I do not have a lease, but doesn't Massachusetts law force him to give me a reason?

Editor's Response

Sorry about your situation, but, no. With a tenancy at will there is no requirement under Massachusetts law that your landlord provide a reason for the eviction. That is the nature of the beast. Similarly, if you wanted to move out, you would not have to provide a reason in your thirty day notice. Landlords can evict tenants at will for any, legal and non-discriminatory reason.
