Quick question on violation of lease from "an unapproved person living in the apartment." Thanks!

Hey all, thanks so much for the help in advance.

I am looking to move in with my girlfriend, and of course I stay with her sometimes. My primary address is in a different town (on my license etc), and I receive no bills at her apartment. We wanted to have me move in, and have me added to the lease. We requested the paperwork to do so from the agency, and they, while providing it eventually, also sent my girlfriend a letter saying she was in violation of the lease because she had an unauthorized person living in the apartment.

My question is what can be done about this? We will of course reply with certified mail, but I want to know the definition of "living in an apartment" as opposed to just visiting. Surely, they can not prohibit a significant other from visiting and stay nights at an apartment. She has a lease until the end of May, and I can not think of a reason why they are making it difficult for me to move in, as she has always paid rent on time, never had complaints, and we approached them about me moving in and going through their procedure. Also, I was trying to buy a parking pass, so they would be making more money if I moved in. Very confusing

At this point I am considering moving to a different address in her town. What can the landlord legally prohibit in terms of how often I can be there etc? What would make my girlfriend in violation of the lease? I have never heard of a landlord being able to prohibit a person from being in the apartment for any amount of time or it violating a lease.

Thanks a bunch, I have been looking though a lot of MA real estate law online but all I can find is basically that she can be evicted to being in violation of the lease.
