purchased home 11 years ago, renting with life tenancy to previous owner, now we want to move into that home

Eleven years ago we purchased a home and have been renting ($550 per month ever since)to the previous owner.
We now would like to no longer rent the home but move in ourselves. The issue is in the deed where the owner, a single man at the time is listed as "life tenant", he has since gotten married and his wife is not listed as life tenant just him.
My question is.... even though it is deeded "life tenant" can he keep us from living in this home that we own. His rent does not even contribute to half of the mortgage fees.
