What is the best way to protect our home from law suits? We put a the homestead act on the property after we bought it. That only protects I think $500,000 dollars of the value of the home. I think the value of the property is more then the Homestead protection on the property. We own the property outright and have no mortgage. We would like to be protected from any lawsuit but right now we have a contractor who we have a dispute with because of poor and incorrect installation and the wrong products used on the job. We have paid them $50,000 dollars of the $55,000 that was signed for in the contract and do not want to pay them anymore until the issues are resolve. They have more work to do on the job but I'm unsure if I want them to continue because of the problems. The contract for the job was only signed by me and not my spouse. Can we use a trust to protect the property? If so what kind of trust? Does it protect the house from liens. If they can't put a lien on the property, I think it would give me more leverage with the contractor to reach an agreement.
