Does a lien on land expire after a certain time line.

Editor's Response

As far as I know, under MA law a lien does not expire.  You have to obtain a release and file it at the registry of deeds.  You get the release either from the lien-holder (after you pay the debt) or by court order (if you can convince the court that the lien is invalid or was filed inappropriately).  Good luck

Expiration of property lien

This lien was recorded in 1983 and paid in 1986 but never released and now has become a problem. The lawyer who paid off the lien from proceeds of a property sale can't find the file and canceled check. Now what? Thanks for your help. The lien specified a 5 year payoff date (which was met) and no collection has been tried. Thanks again, WayneK
