Pay Partial Rent

I had a lenghthy phone conversation with my landlards explaining I was laid off & can't afford the full rent at this time. They agreed I could pay partial rent and owe them the rest when I get back on my feet. I wrote a letter thanking them and agreed I would pay them back every cent that I withhold each month. Three weeks later I received a note from them stating they received partial rent for the month with the remainder due the following month. So it seems they reneged on their agreement. Is there any recourse? Can one be evicted for paying partial rent due to hardship?
