My mother was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease several months ago. She's only 55 and still works and needs the job. She can still work, but I'm wondering about what will happen down the road. When should she apply for Social Security Disability Insurance? Is it just a matter of waiting for her disability to reach the point where she can no longer work? Thanks for any information.

Social Security Disability Insurance and Parkinson's

I'm very sorry to hear about your mother, and hopefully she will not need this information for many years to come.  Yes, you are correct.  Parkinson's is a degenerative disease that can take years or decades to progress to the point that it interferes with a person's ability to work.  As you may know from reading other posts in this Forum, assuming your mother has a qualifying work history, eligibility for SSDI will depend on her ability to work.  When she reaches the point that the Parkinson's impedes that ability, she may want to discuss her case with an attorney who specializes in disability law, to help her lay the groundwork for her SSDI claim.  Good luck.
