Overtime for working more than 9 hours in a day

Our supervisor often keeps us longer than 9 hours a day (with a lunch break) when we're trying to finish up a job. It messes up everyone's schedule and is kind of a pain in the butt if you had things you wanted to do after work. He says we don't need to get overtime or time an a half because at the end of the week he always makes sure we don't go over 40 hours. Can he do that under Massachusetts law? It seems like he's playing the system to avoid having to pay overtime. Thanks for your info.

Overtime pay in MA

Sorry, but the key measure is how many hours you work in a week, not in a day.  The scheduling sounds annoying, but as long as that weekly total does not exceed 40 hours, your employer avoids the overtime requirement imposed by Massachusetts law.  If you go over that 40 hours, and your employer does not pay the time and a half, you may be entitled to triple pay, plus interest and attorney's fees.  You can follow this link for more information about the Massachusetts overtime pay law.  Good luck.
