Although it used to be, obesity is no longer listed as a specific medical condition by the Social Security Administration. Now, those who are obese and apply for SSDI have their condition evaluated in conjunction with other impairments that may accompany or be exacerbated by obesity, such as asthma, heart conditions, or other functional limitations. The change is not really that important because, as always, eligibility for SSDI usually hinges on what you are, or are not, able to do (what the SSA refers to as functional ability) rather than on a description of a specified medical or mental condition. Follow this link to a thread with more information about how the SSA determines if a person is entitled to disability benefits.
