Hello all. Thanks so much for this forum. It's been quite interesting reading the threads. Now I have my own question.
I'd like to change my name. I was born in Massachusetts but currently live overseas.
The country that I live in does not allow name changes without some serious court proceeding. You need to provide proof of "mental suffering" which I don't really have. It's more of an inconvenience and they suggest that a name change should be done in the country of birth.
Is there anyway I can do this using a representative in MA? Do I have to be present in court? How long does it take (ie, if I need to be in the country I'd have to plan to say how long)?

Pretty sure that, in most cases, you do not need to appear in court and that you can retain the services of a Massachusetts attorney to file the paper work. If there are unusual circumstances (for example, if you do not wish to publish the required notice (as is required by law), you may have to appear in court.
