I got a notice in an email sent by a friend who told me that the Medicare Open Enrollment Period is coming up on October 15. We're both widows and neither of us is happy with our plan but we have no idea what our options are. Are there any websites that you know about that might help explain our options in very simple terms?

Medicare Open Enrollment
Yes, this year the Open Enrollment Period will run from October 15 through December 6. This is a chance for you to review your Medicare health and drug benefits and decide what changes, if any, you need to make. I agree with you: Medicare and its various benefits can be very confusing. I'm sure there are many websites that offer help, and you can locate them with a Google search. The official government Medicare site is pretty good. http://www.medicare.gov/default.aspx However, I may I have a better option for you. If you are a Massachusetts resident, there is a program that can help. Shine, or "Serving the Health Information Needs of Elders" provides experienced counselors who, among other things, are trained to help people review their Medicare coverage. Just give them a call at 1-800-AGE-INFO (1-800-243-4636). Good luck.
