It seems like I'm the only one in who actually gets called and shows up for jury duty. How else is it possible that every three years, just about to the day, I get another notice to show up for Massachusetts jury duty?. Give me a break. So what is the penalty or fine in MA if I just don't show up? I'm betting that the state is so messed up and broke that nobody will give me a hard time.

Jury Duty
As a former Prosecutor, I have prosecuted people for not showing up for Jury Duty. It isn't fun, people with no record now get a record because they did not show up one day for jury service. You can be charged with a crime and fined up to $2,000. The best thing to do is show up and complete your service. I beleive 99% of jurors only spend one day in the courts and most are dismissed before noon. You would avoid a lot of headaches in the future. Kevin Gaughen Jr.
Editor's Response
I thought I was the only one who got called for Massachusetts jury duty every three years to the day. I'm happy to meet another with the same problem. However, Attorney Gaughen is obviously correct about this one. Apparently the Massachusetts Office of the Jury Commissioner installed a serious computer system and program a few years ago that helps it to track down those who blow off jury duty. In 2007 the Commissioner nailed almost 20,000 people who 'forgot' about their civil duty. Those people had criminal complaints issued against them and were summoned to appear in court. As you may know from reading your jury summons, "a knowing failure to obey this summons without justifiable excuse is a crime, which is punishable by a fine of not more than $2000 . . . "
So, again, I think we should both do our duty. If you are interested in more information, you can check out the Massachusetts jury duty website or review Massachusetts General Laws chapter 234. See you at court.
