MA law about free bank accounts and senior citizen discounts?

I actually have two questions. Is it true that certain senior citizen discounts are required by Massachusetts law? It seems like there's a huge difference from store to store about if they have a discount and when it's available and so forth. Also, do banks have to give free bank accounts to seniors? And do you have to give me an answer because I'm a senior? (Just kidding.)

LOL.  No, I do not know of any law in MA that requires senior discounts.  Stores or service providers who offer such discounts are allowed to establish the rules and times when customers can take advantage of the discounts.  That is why you notice such a variance.

However, Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 167D, Section 2 requires banks that are chartered in Massachusetts to give you a so-called "18-65 account" IF you ask for one.  These are free checking or savings accounts available to those 65 or over (and to those 18 and younger) with no fees for standard services and no minimum balances required.  (Ask the bank in question for a full list of their 'standard services.')

A couple of caveats, though:  Banks are not required to offer you an 18-65 account, or any type of account, if you do not meet their standards or requirements.  For example, if you have a long history of bouncing checks, the bank may decline your request.  Also, if you wish to open a joint account, both parties must qualify.  So, for example, you could not open an 18-65 account with your thirty year-old son.  Good luck.
