Is this tax (0.456% in most counties) only due (to be paid by seller) if financial consideration $$ is paid for the property?
If title to a property is transfered for no money (e.g. to transfer ownership to/from Joint Tenancy) is their any such tax due?

MA Stamp taxes
Generally yes (as to your first question) - the stamp tax due is based on the value of the consideration paid to the seller. If the transfer is for no consideration (generally worded "for nominal consideration paid of less than One Hundred ($100.00) Dollars"), then the Registry of Deeds will charge recording fees, but no stamp taxes.
