In Massachusetts, is it all likely that a court will order my husband to pay me alimony for life, or will he just have to pay for a while? Posted by Simmy on The Forum.
Editor's Response:
If the court awards you alimony, yes, it is possible. However, depending on the income of your spouse and whether he has been ordered to pay child support, he may not make enough money to pay alimony. Also, in Massachusetts, lifetime alimony is usually only awarded after the dissolution of a long-term marriage, generally 20 years in Massachusetts. For other marriages, courts are more likely to award "rehabilitative" alimony, designed to give the recipient time to 'get back on her feet' in the workplace.
