I haven't talked to my attorney about this yet because I didn't want to add any confusion to my estate plan, but do you think an attorney in Massachusetts would allow me to give him a legacy letter (my girl friend says that's what it's called) to my family to be read after I die? I want to explain a few things and talk about some issues that I probably should have talked about a long time ago, but I'm not sure how to do it. Thank you.

Absolutely. Legacy letters, sometimes called ethical wills are very common. I encourage you to talk to your attorney about it as soon as you can. I can not imagine that any estate planning professional would object to helping you with this. For your information, there are even books available to help people write legacy letters and explain possible scenarios for how they will be given or read to your family and loved ones. (If you search Ethical will or Legacy Letter on Amazon you will find many titles.) Good luck.
