Recently informed my landlord that my husband and I were ending our lease at thr end of our term because we bought a house. Worked with him and cooperated to get showings scheduled and got our apt rented quickly. We live in a complex of 4 apts and another unit's lease is almost up and now the landlord wants to still show our apt to get tenants for this other apt, instead of showing the apt that is actually to be rented. I'm guessing that the other apt is a mess (a bunch of young kids live there) compared to our nicely furnished apt. I played along when we were renting our own apt, but I work from home and so I'm there all day. Showings are very disruptive to my day. I do not feel like I should be legally obligated to show my apt as a "model unit", am I?

Landlord showing apartment
I don't believe you are obligated to allow your landlord to show your unit. Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 186, Section 15B allows the landlord to enter your apartment for certain specified reasons, including showing the unit to prospective tenants. Obviously, the people he wants to let into your unit are not prospective tenants, for your unit anyway. On the other hand, in the interest of maintaining good relations with the landlord, you might agree to allow him to show the place to one or two "serious" applicants.
Thank you for your response!
Thank you for your response! I didn't think we were obligated, it was just hard to find a clear answer anywhere. The landlord has been on thin ice with us anyway (making loud improvements on the property for 3.5 months straight from 9am-5pm, all week long) and other incidents that have just been plain rude, so I really don't feel obliged to offer him any favors at the moment. :) Thank you for your response!
