My parents are visiting for a week and even though my landlord initially told me he had no problem with them staying over he later forbid them to be at his property.
I'm a tenant at will on a 4 br apartment. I had a lease but it finished some months back and at the time I was in good terms with the landlord so I just kept paying the rent. I've been here for almost 2 years and I never had anyone staying for over a day / weekend (and only twice). Therefore and even though I have some utilities included in the rent I told my landlord I think it would be fair to have my parents over without any extra fee as I've been out of the place for at least 2 months in total and never got any rebate on the rent as well. I asked my housemates if they were ok with it and they all said they wouldn't mind. My parents will be staying at my room.
He actually agreed and said he had no problem with it.
Still, a couple of hours afterwards I found he was going to rent the 4th room for the last 2 weeks of the month. That room used to be occupied by a girl who moved in with her boyfriend but because her lease only ended by the end of the month, she still payed the month of August (The landlord told her that if she would give him the keys already he would just keep the security deposit and she would not pay the last month. The value of the security deposit is exactly a months rent). I asked the landlord if our old house mate hadn't paid for August and he told me he had arranged everything with her.
Speaking with her later that day she tells me she did not know about it and would promptly call him to retrieve her money if the landlord was going to rent the room (I imagine that he can not charge two different people for the same room).
I don't know how the conversation went but a couple of minutes later I get a call from my landlord screaming a lot of things among them that he would not allow my parents to stay on his property.
Is he actually allowed to decide who we receive as a guest in our home? Even though I no longer have a lease, the old one did not mention anything about guests (only a general statement that only the tenants can live in the apartment).
He's pretty intrusive in general, he comes into the house without giving us notice either to show it (today when I was about to leave as I open the door he was about to enter with someone to show the room. more than once he knocks and then instantly opens the door) or even for repairs (he decided to install a exhaustion system on top of the oven, once more he told us nothing about it, when we get home we see that he moved some stuff from the cupboards to get room for what he needed and just left it laying around, and the oven full of wooden chips for us to clean..)
Thanks for the help and sorry for the long post.
