I ride my bike for exercise nearly 8 months out of every year, and more if the weather cooperates. So far I've been lucky and never had an accident. But I see bad driving all the time and have had some near misses where cars pull out in front of me and force me to brake hard. Can I buy insurance for myself to cover me if I ever get in a accident. I have health insurance and I guess I can sue the driver, but I was wondering about lost wages and extreme damages that might result from a bad accident or with someone who has no insurance or is not licensed. Thanks.

Good question. My understanding (and you can check with your insurance agent on this issue) is that if you drive a car and have insurance, you may already have insurance for the type of damages you mention. That part of your policy called "under-insured and uninsured motorist coverage" will provide additional protection if you are injured by a driver with little or no insurance. Also, the "Medical Payments" coverage in your policy will also come into play. This is an optional coverage, so, again, check with your insurance agent about costs and applicability. Both of these insurances are relatively inexpensive, so you can increase your levels of coverage if you so desire. If you do not have a car but live in a household with someone who does, it is also possible you could make a claim under his or her auto insurance policy. Good luck, and happy riding.
