I have been living in an apartment for a little over a year now. My one year ended Aug 20, 2010. I told the landlord on the 20th that I wanted to move out, he stated that I had to give a 30 days notice. On Sept 16th, he wanted me to vacate the building because a fire inspector was coming to check the building, and the he was going to tell him that the space was for storage. I found that a little odd and when I returned I asked if the apartment was legal, he said yes. I also asked why he never put a seperate electrical meter for me when I asked months ago, and he told me because the city said the apartment wasn't legal but he could still rent it out legally. Sept 17th I asked him if everything was ok, so that I could leave on the 20th, he said ok. When I went on the 19th he claimed that he was in shock because of an accident on the 17th and didn't know what he was saying disagreed. After a few days he handed me a printout of landlord rights stating I had to provide a written notice 30 days prior. I called a building inspector and I found out that my apartment was in fact illegal, I have been moving my things out since but I am waiting to get an appointment with the inspector. Can I get my two months rent back and how would I go about it?
