Hi. I looked through your forum pretty carefully but I can't find information on this. My father recently passed away and left the car that he and my mom used but it was in his name. There must be a way for a spouse to get a car in her name and register it after the husband or wife dies right? We are starting probate but would like to take care of this car quickly. Thanks.

Transfer automobile registration to surviving spouse
Sorry about your dad. Massachusetts law does allow a surviving spouse to transfer the ownership of a motor vehicle that was in the name of a deceased spouse. The surviving husband or wife does not need to wait for the probate process to run its course. You can read this article about the transfer of a car after the death of a spouse. In a nut shell, there is a form at the Department of Motor vehicle website that the surviving husband or wife must fill out. The car is then re-titled into the survivor's name. In many cases, the form is also available from your automobile insurance agent. Good luck.
