How much notice is needed on a month-to-month lease

My family has rented our current home for a year & a half. The year lease was up 1 June 2011 & we have been month-to-month for the past six months. We really want & need to move out to a larger place as soon as possible. How much notice do we need to give our landlord if we are month-to-month? Also, we pre-paid the last month's rent before moving in, however the rent has gone up since then. We will owe the difference, or is it considered paid?

Thank you!

Proper length of notice to end tenancy

To end a tenancy at will, the landlord or the tenant must give notice in advance equal to one rental period or thirty days, whichever is longer.  Whatever the rent is currently, that is what you owe for your last month, regardless of what you paid in advance.
