If I file bankruptcy next month (or sooner) as I plan, how long until my debts are discharged? Of does it vary? Thanks for your help.

Depends on the type of petition you file (and that is a determination that is best made after talking to a bankruptcy attorney). If you file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, your debts may be discharged in 3 to 8 months. However, with a chapter 13 bankruptcy, it can take a few months for the court to approve your repayment plan. After that, the actual discharge of debt will not occur until you have satisfied all of the requirements of that plan. That can take anywhere from three to five years depending on the plan. Good luck, and please tell your friends about The Forum.
