In the next few months I'm going to start a project on my house. I've already talked to one contractor about the job. I thought I could get his registration number from his card (for some reason I feel odd asking for the number) but it was not there. So now I'm wondering about the law and doesn't it require contractors to put their registration number on their cards and stuff like that? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Yes, you are wise to look for and hire only a registered contractor. Using a registered contractor allows you to qualify for possible compensation from the Massachusetts Guaranty Fund if things head south and you end up in a dispute with your contractor. Don't be shy, though, about asking for the number. The best contractors are always registered and do not mind providing the information.
As for your question, under Massachusetts regulation, the registration number should be in any contract and in "Any commercial message in any newspaper, magazine, leaflet, flyer, catalog, display space in the telephone book, on radio, television, public address system, or made in person, by letter or other printed material, or any interior or exterior sign or display, including on a vehicle, which is delivered or made available to an owner by a registrant in any manner whatsoever."
Hope that helps. For more information about home contractors, visit our Massachusetts Consumer Protection Law Discussion Forum.
