Gift Certificate from a closed business

Earlier this year I bought a gift certificate from a nice restaurant as a gift for a friend. A couple months later the establishment closed down before my friend used the gift certificate (which I bought via a credit card). I checked through the state filings for the establishment and didn't see any bankruptcy filing. What are the general rules in a case like this? Is there any chance I can recoup the value of the gift certificate (which was almost $200 - it was a good friend!).

I've opened an inquiry with the better business bureau, but I am just wondering if I'm on a fool’s errand.

I guess it depends on how hard you want to work for $200.  If you cannot find information about the owner at the Secretary of State website, I suppose if you Googled the name of the restaurant you might find a local news piece that identifies the owner.  Then you could demand a refund and/or sue in small claims court.  Good luck.

You'll find the name of the registered owner as well as the registered agent for the company. This is who you would sue if you want to get your money back. A 93a demand letter could help also....
