Am now told by my unusually secretive (or perhaps too busy to talk to me) lawyer that we will soon be having a four way meeting with my husband and his attorney. What is that and why do we need to do it? It sounds like another opportunity for my lawyer to bill me for his time.

Sorry about your relationship with your divorce attorney (it doesn't sound good) In any case, the four way meeting is a court mandated meeting that the parties and their lawyers attend prior to the pretrial conference. The point of the meeting is to talk about the possibility of settling any outstanding issues and, ideally, avoid a costly trial. Typically, the four way meeting is held after all discovery is complete and the valuation and appraisal reports are in. You don't sound too excited about the meeting, but, honestly, even if you cannot resolve all of your differences at the meeting, any you can resolve here (or at the pre-trial conference) can shorten the trial and save you money. Good luck. For more information or to post a question, visit our Massachusetts Divorce Discussion Forum.
