Speak with your friends and family for recommendations. Or try the local bar association, they all have lawyer referral services. You can also try a Google or Yellow Pages search. When you do choose a lawyer, please reply post to let us know how you ultimately chose one. Sorry about your situation. I'm sure you know there is no shortage of attorneys out there who handle divorce in MA. I understand your question to be more personal: How do you find a divorce attorney that will be right for you? Let me start by saying what I have said in other similar posts. Not all attorneys are created equal. There can be vast differences in training, experience, personality, and--let's face it--intelligence. So, as uncomfortable as this may be for you, you will have to shop around and find the right one.
The best place to start is with friends and family members who have been divorced. They may be an excellent source of information and might be able to refer you to a lawyer. If that is not an option, then it really does not matter where you start: Our attorney directory, the phone book, the side of a bus, or a radio ad. The key will be to meet with your prospective attorney, ask questions (bring a list with you to the interview) and listen to what your gut says.
If I were in your shoes, I would ask questions about his or her level of experience with divorce cases, how she communicates with clients, how often she updates clients, and any other topics that might be uniquely relevant to your situation. The goal here is not simply to collect information, but to assess the attorney's style and and personality. Does she make you feel comfortable? Does she answer questions patiently and in terms you can understand. Remember, you will be working with this person for a while, so make sure you find someone who you believe will support you through the process.
Definitely talk to the divorce lawyers about fees and the fee agreement. Find out how much it will cost and whether you will have to come up with a large up-front payment (retainer). Make sure you read any fee agreement carefully and ask questions if it is not perfectly clear to you. Obviously, the cost will impact your decision, so you will need to find the attorney that you are most comfortable with within your price range.
I hope that helps. Good luck.
