Hello. Over the last few years I haven't seen any doctors because of lack of funds and other reasons except for last month when I went to see a doctor at a clinic about my knees. I have a hard time walking because of arthritis and recently have been missing work. So if I apply for SSDI now will I be able to collect benefits even though I don't have a lot of medical records?

Social Security without medical records

Yes, it is possible, but not an ideal situation.  If you have no documentation regarding your disability, it is likely that the disability examiner who looks at your case initially will send you to a social security medical exam.  This exam is referred to as a consultative examination and will be performed by a private doctor who is paid a fee..  I would consult with a Massachusetts disability lawyer before taking any action but, in my opinion, this is not the way to go.  I would rather have you establish a medical record before starting the application process.  Even though money may be tight, I would establish a relationship with a doctor, have her examine you, and request that she fill out a residual functional capacity form, a document that allows the doctor to discuss, in detail, what your functional limitations are.  Again, talk to an attorney before taking any steps, but if you are truly disabled, a good first step toward approval of SSDI benefits is to establish an independent record of that disability.  Good luck.
